Florence, 26-27 May 2023.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the massacre in Via dei Georgofili near the Uffizi Gallery that shocked Florence and the whole of Italy. The explosion of the car bomb caused the killing of several people including the little Nadia and Caterina Nencioni as well as the wounding of about forty people. For this anniversary, I created a work that could celebrate the memory of that tragic night, in which the criminal action of the mafia struck Florence, symbol of art and beauty in the world causing the death of innocents. It is a round in lava stone from Etna, inside I wanted to represent in one side one of the symbols of Palermo, San Giovanni degli Eremiti while on the opposite side the Torre dei Pulci seat of the Accademia dei Georgofili, where the car bomb was placed. These are two symbolic places that recall thirty years later the victory of the State over the mafia through the arrest in Palermo of the mafia boss Matteo Messina Denaro, by the Carabinieri (Ros), and the Torre dei Pulci in Florence where, among others, the little Nadia Nencioni died. In the background of a majolica sunset I wanted to bring back the poem, written by little Nadia who still today after so many years, while moving us, fills us with responsibility. The sun rising between the domes of San Giovanni degli eremiti in Palermo wants to signify the victory of good, the State, over mafia evil. I hope that this work can contribute to the memory of that tragic massacre of little Nadia and at the same time can be a valid stimulus for those who will observe her. The works were installed, one at the nursery school in San Casciano Val di Pesa, the place of origin of the Nencioni family, and one at the ROS Palermo Barracks
